In the shop: The Webbs, with Chula

Chula
This week’s sign is for the Webbs, and their dog Chula is going in it. Chula’s giveaway is one ear that flops while the other stands up, so that’s the detail I was watching for.

Chula, and that ear
The design
It started as the approved 3D design on the laptop, with the board already clamped to the CNC behind it.

Roughing
The roughing pass clears out the background so the scene can stand up.

Finishing
Then the fine finishing pass brings out the detail. The timelapses squeeze it down to under half a minute.
Carved
The carving is done. Chula sits on the left, ear and all, with a loon in the oval below the name, a bird in the border, and a golf bag and dock on the right.

Low light across the carving shows the depth
Stained
Off the machine, it got a good brushing to clear the dust out of the detail, and then the stain. The cedar goes from pale and raw to a deep, warm brown, and the carving suddenly reads from across the room.
Next
Next it dries, then gets its exterior finish. I’ll post the finished sign here once it’s up on the house.
